Make a donation to the Friends of Mono Lake Reserve

Since 1982 the Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve has maintained a strong tradition of interpretation, education, and protection at the lake. Please help us continue that tradition by making a donation to the Friends of Mono Lake Reserve which grants money to the State Natural Reserve to continue this important work. When you donate to the FOMLR we won't have the resources to send you free gifts or the staff to send you mailings asking for more money. We may send you a notice in a year's time asking if you'd like to recharge your donation.

We hope your biggest reward will come from knowing that you're supporting a unique organization that helps fund the following activities (and more):

  • Public interpretive/nature walks including bird walks
  • Protection and monitoring of State Park lands
  • Maintenance of interpretive trails at the lake shore
  • Roving and patrol of visitor use areas by interpretive staff
  • Coordination of school field trips at the lake
  • Birding by Ear workshops
  • Planning the Mono Basin Bird Chautauqua (bird festival)
  • Volunteer training and coordination
  • Researching current science

Current Projects

Help us fund volunteer training
With dwindling budgets our volunteers are more important than ever! We hire our retired State Park Ranger each spring to put our volunteers through an extensive natural history and orientation training program so they can be ready to meet the 250,000 visitors to Mono Lake each year.

Help us purchase a new spotting scope
Volunteers set up a spotting scope along our interpretive trails at the lake shore for visitors to view the osprey and other bird life. It's a great way to connect the visitors to this unique ecosystem at the lake.

Support our Osprey Conservation Efforts
Your donation will contribute to osprey conservation, funding research which includes annual nestling banding which was initiated in 2009. Osprey are a fish-eating bird that generally nest within 1 mile of fishable waters, yet at Mono Lake fishable waters are a minimum of 1.5 miles from nests. Despite this, the nesting birds are successful, fledging an average of 1.6 young per active nest since 2004. To effectively manage this population it is important to learn about local and long distance movements, especially which foraging habitats are supporting its reproduction.
